A substance can exist in three different states namely solid, liquid and gas.
It can easily change from one matter to another and also in reverse direction. Some substances change from the solid to gaseous state via liquid state however other get directly converted to gas through sublimation.
In short, the interchangeability depends on the particular attributes of the element.
