African independence movements began in the 20th century, during which time regions in Africa that were under European administration experienced a surge of independence movements.

  • Mandela called on all South Africans to oppose apartheid.
  • Mandela fought apartheid, a system of white domination in South Africa. During apartheid, everyone was categorized as either "white/European," "black," "colored," or "Indian/Asian." People of race in South Africa were considered second-class citizens with little to no political power.
  • Every aspect of people's lives was subject to stringent laws that also restricted their ability to access social services like healthcare and education as well as where they might live, work, and travel.
  • One of the most significant political developments of the 20th century was the liberation of Southern Africa and the overthrow of the Apartheid system.
  • The complicated and varied liberation struggles in the area are the focus of this book, with a special emphasis on Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Institutions supporting the teaching and research of African studies, anthropology, art and art history, ethnicity and race relations, gender studies, history, and international studies, can benefit from the diverse resources of southern Africa.
