Generally the pollutants that are emitted by a petrol engine contains oxides of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur along with hydrocarbons and lead. But it is the quantity of carbon monoxide (CO) in the smoke which is checked for PUCC which stands for Pollution Under Control Certificate. This certificate is mandatory in India and it is renewed after every six months. Vehicles that have this certificate are not checked everytime. This certificate is issued only if smoke has less than 3% CO concentration. Generally it takes 7-10 minutes while checking.

While conducting a pollution check the following gas are emitted from pollution and they are check:

- Nitrogen Oxide
- 5% Fine Particulate matter
- 1% voc
- 2% carbon monoxide
- 0.3% sulphur dioxide
- 8% air toxics
- 3% coolants like ozone

The time spent on each vehicle varies on the type if its petrol then it takes around 10 minutes if its diesel it takes 15-20 minutes.
