Consumption of adulterated and spurious food items is serious health hazard.

Information received from States/UT Governments in the year 2013-14 where  72,200 food samples including milk/milk products, edible vegetable oils, spices, pulses, vegetables were analyzed and 13,571 samples to be adulterated and misbranded.

Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 gives graded penalties for infringement of provisions of the Act.

To curb this menace of food adulteration, regular surveillance, monitoring & sampling of food products is undertaken by State /UT Governments under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, Rules and Regulations made thereunder.
