Given   : to the nearest pound, tim has £8

to the nearest 50p, sue has £4.50

To Find :   work out the maximum possible total amount of money

Solution:

to the nearest pound, tim has £8

=>  7.5   ≤  Tim  has   <  8.5

sue has £4.50

to the nearest 50 p

=>  4.25  ≤   Sue   <  4.75

=> possible total amount of money

= 7. 5 +  4.25 ≤    Amount <  8.5 + 4.75

=>   11.75   ≤    Amount <  13.25

maximum possible total amount of money would be less than 13.25

and in term of paisa   maximum <  4.75   = 4.74

and maximum less than   <  8.5  = 8.49

Hence maximum possible total amount of money would be  = 13.23  £

 maximum possible total amount of money would be  = 13.23  £
