Roots respond positively to stimuli gravity whereas shoots respond positively to sunlight and hence show negative geotropism.
- Plants show certain behaviour in response to particular environmental conditions.
- The growth of roots is downwards. As gravity acts downwards hence we say that roots show positive geotropism. Shoots grow upwards against the direction of gravity hence shoots show negative geotropism.
- Shoots respond to sunlight by growing upwards in the direction of sunlight. Hence, we say that shoots are positively phototropic. Roots grow downwards against the direction of sunlight. Hence, roots are negatively phototropic.
- Hence, we say that roots respond positively to the directional stimuli of geotropism. Shoots respond positively to the directional stimuli of phototropism.
