But you’ve got to wonder about those who still smoke.

It was different years ago before the long term dangers were known. There was no consensus and the tobacco companies went to a lot of effort to obfuscate. You can’t really blame them. They stood to lose revenue.

But today, there’s absolutely no doubt about the health consequences. Cigarettes are prohibitively expensive. There are few public places in which to indulge. And smokers are regarded by the general nonsmoking public as . . . let’s say impaired in the exercise of sensible judgment.
