Lead acetate can be used instead of lead nitrate.

Explanation:

  • When aqueous lead nitrate is added to potassium iodide, Iodide ion displaces nitrate from lead nitrate and Nitrate displaces iodine from potassium iodide.
  • The color of Potassium nitrate formed is white and that of lead nitrate is Yellow. The compound lead iodide is the precipitate formed.
  • Now, if we do not get the lead nitrate we can use the Lead acetate.
  • Lead acetate dissolves in water to give lead ion and acetate ion and on reacting with potassium iodide.
  • The lead ion joins with the iodine ion to form lead iodide and potassium ion joins with acetate ion to form potassium acetate.
