Tom convinces Ben that whitewashing a fence is great pleasure and hearing this Ben gets the urge to whitewash himself and in return to that he gave Tom his apple. After that every boy who passed by gave something to Tom in exchange of letting them participate in whitewashing too. At the end of the day Tom collects lots of stuff that is wealth to him and he learns about the great law of human action that to make a man covet something it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain. Then he heads back to report his work to Aunt Polly.
