The story that I read last week......
When I was growing up, it was popular for pediatricians to put a rack of children's books in their waiting rooms alongside their germy toys.
It was not uncommon to find Highlights magazine in the racks, alongside Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories, such were the top picks of the times.
The first book I remember reading by myself, I picked up when I was awaiting a consultation for my first surgery, a tonsillectomy, with Dr. Vaupel when I was only six years old.
His waiting room was full that day, so I decided to read myself a story. It took a long time. There were a lot of words, and very few pictures in it for a six-year-old.
The illustrations were pretty messed up.
I remember pulling the book from the rack and, with widened eyes, I sat down and started reading.
A horrible story!
It might have been better, had I not been able to read at all, at such a young age, such was the twisted plot Uncle Arthur spun.
The story was about a little boy named Bobby, who had been run over by a car and was horribly injured.
He was subsequently hospitalized for his injuries.
He was failing on his hospital bed, and at the end of the sad story, his brother propped up his arm to hold it up to the heavens so Jesus could see it. Bobby was too weak to hold up his own hand, so his brother propped it up with pillows for him.
