he is doubtful about Ali whom he had seen that morning.he knew that ali had been dead for 3 months but was sure that he had seen him. he was bewildered and was asking himself if it was just his imaginatin  or not
the postmaster had earlier disgraced ali by calling him a pest. he did not understand Ali's problem.however as his own daughter lay ill in another town  and he not yet received any news from her,the father in him realized Ali's agony and thus he was tortured by remorse
