Water travels through xylem vessels and tracheids to the upper parts of the plant. In the leaves, water molecules are split up into hydrogen and oxygen molecules during photosynthesis and oxygen is removed through stomata. Some excess water is removed through the stomata, thus causing the pull of transpiration.
