This poem is about a little child who is amused by trains and is obsessed with it. The first stanza refers to a goods train which has no windows, no shining lamps and no doors. It moves tediously like shadows. The child compares this to elephants because they are huge and moves slowly. The second stanza refers to a passenger train which is lit by shining lamps and moves faster. Personification is applied (that dance and whirl with movement swift) in this stanza. The child compares this to a marriage proccession. In the third stanza , the child presents the world as sleepy with heat. He says that even the crow forgets to caw. The child says how he watches how the trains march along the iron road even when the rest of the world is sleepy. In the 4th stanza, the child's obsession is shown as he tells that in the night when he hears the distant rumble of a train, he gets up and looks at the window through the glimmer of the moon only to find the train moving like a serpent. At the final stanza, the child's curiousity is shown. He wonders where the trains go at the end of their restless journeyings.
