let ABC be the equilateral triangle of side 10 cm.

draw AD perpendicular to BC

AB = 10cm

AD = x

BD= 5cm ( since altitude of a equilateral triangle divides the base into equal halves)

AD^2 = AB^2  - BD^2

         = 10^2 - 5^2

         = 100-25

       AD^2  = 75

                    = 5√3 cm
