Answer:

increase friction

The presence of treads on the tyre increases the roughness of the surface. Because of this increased roughness, the contact between the surface of the tyre and the surface of the road is more prominent. So when the wheel tries to roll on the road, the surface of the road tries to oppose it strongly and hence increases the friction. This friction is useful to prevent the wheel from slipping.
