If two forces are spplied in opposite direction and it's magnitude is also equal thrn resultant force is 0.
So, Let F1=10N
F2=-10N
Hence, resultant force=10+(-10)
=0

Hope it helps.....

narayanvishvakarma: i am not satisfied
Srashti11: what you want now
Srashti11: tell me I'll edit the answer
narayanvishvakarma: please explain in short
narayanvishvakarma: because when 10 newton fan is joint to roof then resultant force is 10newton but here roof is also pulling the fan with 10newton
sha30: srashti is right....we can add only those two forces which act on same body....if two children apply equal and opposite forces on two difference foofballs....would the two forces cancill
sha30: in case of fan.....earth pulls fan by say 10 N down and roof pulls fan 10 N up...as both forces act on fan u r allowed to add them and ans. is zero and you see fan at rest happily
sha30: now we can come to roof seperately....fan exerts 10 N down on roof...walls react 10 N up on roof....gravity acts 9999(say) down on roof.....as all forces r acting on roof u can add...as roof is happily at rest one thing is clear sum of all these is zero
sha30: hope you wont add forces on fan and on roof they r different things....pickle of forces
