Solution :

Given:

✏ Two blocks A and B of masses 3M and M respectively are connected by a massless and inextensible string.

✏ The whole system is suspended by a massless spring. (Attachment-1)

To Find:

✏ The magnitude of acceleration of A and B immediately after the string is cut, are respectively.

Calculation:

✏ Initially system, is in equilibrium with a total of 4mg over a spting.

(Attachment-2)

  • kx = 4mg

✏ When string is cut at the location as shown in attachment-2.

✏ Free body diagram for m is

(Attachment-3)

✏ So, force on mass m = mg

✏ Acceleration of mass m = g

✏ For mass 3m; Free body diagram is

(Attachment-4)

✏ If a = acceleration of block of mass 3m, then

  • Fnet = 4mg - 3mg
  • 3m\timesa = mg
  • a = g/3

✏ So, acceleration for blocks A and B are

  • Acceleration of A = g/3

  • Acceleration of B = g
