The distance from Town A is 288km.

Distance between the cars= 480km (Given)

Time taken by first car= 8 hours (Given)

Time taken by second car =12 hours (Given)

Speed of the first car = 480/8 = 60

Speed of the second car = 480/12 = 40

Relative speed of the cars when travelling in opposite direction -

= 60 + 40

= 100 km/hr

Therefore the car will meet in time -

= 480/100

= 4.8

Distance from A where they will meet = Speed of A x Time

= 60 × 4.8

= 288

Thus, the distance from Town A is 288km.
