Given :- Two circles of equal radius 6 CM such that the distance between their centres is 15 cm, find the length of transverse common tangent ?

Solution :-

we know that, if two circles having radius as r1 and r2, and distance between their centres is d , then,

  • Length of transverse common tangent = √[(d)² - (r1 + r2)²] .

here, we have ,

  • d = 15cm.
  • r1 = r2 = 6 cm.

So,

→ Length of transverse common tangent = √[(d)² - (r1 + r2)²]

→ Length = √[(15)² - (6 + 6)²]

→ Length = √(225 - 144)

→ Length = √(81)

→ Length = 9 cm. (Ans.)

Hence, the length of transverse common tangent is 9cm.
