Two identical capacitors A and B are charged to the same potential V and are connected in two circuits at t = 0 as shown in figure. The charges on the capacitors at a time t = CR are, respectively,
(a) VC, VC
(b) VC/e, VC
(c) VC, VC/e
(d) VC/e, VC/e.

Two identical capacitors A and B are charged to the same potential V and are connected in two circuits at t = 0. The charges on the capacitors at a time t = CR is VC/e, VC.

Explanation:

  • The diode is forward biased in circuit (a). Thus, a negligible resistance is offered to the current flow and a short circuit can replace this.
  • Through the resistance, the capacitor charge leaks, and it exponentially decays with time. So, the charge of the capacitor is VCe.
  • There is a reverse bias by the diode in circuit (b). Thus, an infinite resistance is offered to the flow of the current.
  • So, an open circuit replaces this. When the circuit is open, across the resistance, no current can flow. Thus, the capacitor/s charge cannot leak via the resistor.
  • Capacitor charge = VC
