Two masses A and B measuring 4 kg and 8 kg are connected
by a string. If a force of 120 N is applied on bigger weight, the
tension shown in the figure is
(A) 20 N
(B) 80 N
(C) 40 N

Answer:

The tension is 40N i.e.option(C).

Explanation:

The net force acting on the blocks is given as,

F=Ma         (1)

Where,

F=net force acting acting on the blocks

M=combined mass of the blocks

a=acceleration acting on the blocks

From the question we get,

M₁=4kg

M₂=8kg

F=120N

M=M₁+M₂=4+8=12kg

By substituting the value of F and M in equation (1) we get;

120=12\times a

a=10m/s^2       (2)

The tension will be given as,

T=M_1a       (3)

By substituting the required values in equation (3) we get;

T=4\times 10=40N

Hence, the tension present in the figure is 40N i.e.option (C).
