Let the numbers be 5x and 4x.
Difference between their squares is (5x)² - (4x)².
(5x)² - (4x)² = 144
= 25x² - 16x² = 144
= 9x² = 144
= (3x)² = 12²
3x = 12
x = 12 ÷ 3 = 4
5x = 5 × 4 = 20
4x = 4 × 4 = 16
