Answer:

smaller number is 4 and greater number is 7

Step-by-step explanation:

consider the smaller number to be x

smaller no.=x

grater number =x+3

greater number + 2(smaller number)=15

x+3 + 2(x) = 15

x+3+2x=15

3x+3=15

3x= 15-3

3x = 12

x=12

3

x=4

smaller number=x

=4

greater number= x+ 3

=4+3 = 7 answer

Given:-

  • Two numbers differ by 3.
  • The sum of the greater number and twice the smaller number is 15.

To find:-

  • The smaller number.

Solution:-

★ In this question we have given the two numbers differ by 3 and the sum of the greater number and twice the smaller number is 15. We have to find out the smaller number. Let's do it.

Let,

  • the greater number be x.
  • the smaller number be y.

According to the question,

★ By the first condition,

⇢ x - y = 3⠀⠀⠀....[1]

★ By the second condition,

⇢ x + 2y = 15⠀⠀....[2]

★ Multiply equation [1] with [2],

⇢ 2x - 2y = 6⠀⠀....[3]

★ Adding equation [3] and [2],

⇢ 2x - 2y = 6

⇢ x + 2y = 15

⇢ 3x = 21

⇢ x = 21/3

⇢ x = 7

★ Substituting x = 7 in equation [2],

⇢ x + 2y = 15

⇢ 7 + 2y = 15

⇢ 2y = 15 - 7

⇢ 2y = 8

⇢ y = 8/2

y = 4

Hence,

  • The smaller number is 4.
