In the Edicts of Ashoka, there are total 33 inscriptions on the stones and pillars of the cave made by theMauryan emperor Ashoka during his reign. The two taxes mentioned in the Edicts of Ashoka are - 'Senabhaktam' or Punitive tax imposed by the army and 'Pindakara' or Fixed CommutedTax.

Two kinds of taxes, bali and bhaga, which are imposed on the general public are referred to in the Edicts of Ashoka.

Apart from these, Senabhaktam, the punitive tax imposed by the royal army on the area through which it passed, Pindakara, a fixed commuted tax to be contributed by the villagers, were applicable; which are referenced in the Edicts.
