Three types of clinical malnutrition arise from it.
Marasmus – This appears when the body fat and tissues degenerate at a drastic rate to make up for the lack of nutrients in the body. This results in a slowdown of the internal processes of the body and also the activity of the immune system.
Kwashiorkor – This is bilateral pitting oedema, which is a condition in which the fluid is retained by the body in the legs and the feet. Because of this fluid retention, the child suffering from malnutrition looks plump.
Marasmic-kwashiorkar – This is a combination of both marasmus and kwashiorkor, and is characterized by severe wasting as well as oedema.
