ultrasonic waves are transmitted from a ship towards the bottom of the sea. It is found that the time interval between the transmitting and receiving is 2.4s. If the speed of sound in the sea water is 1500m/s, find the depth of the sea.

Total distance travelled by the ultrasonic waves=velocity of the ultrasonic waves*Total time taken by the ultrasonic waves

Therefore,

2*Depth of the sea=1400m/s*1.6s

Depth of sea=1120m

Let, the Depth of sea is x,

Distance traveled by sound wave=2d,

Time is taken by sound to travel both ways=1.6s,

Speed of the sound =

time taken

total distance travelled

=1400m/s=

1.6s

2d

d=1120m
