In India, a re-poll takes place when there is an issue with the initial polling process or if the initial polling process has been unsuccessful.
There are many reasons for an unsuccessful initial poll. A few reasons are -
1. When the poll results do not give a majority party as a winner to form the government.
2. When the parties with majority number of votes refuse to form a coalition or work together.
3. When there are internal conflicts within the winning political party.
4. When there is suspected malpractice in the voting system.
A re-poll is declared by the Election Commission of India after taking the situation and reasons into consideration.

There can be a lot of reasons for the re-polling but some of them are the following:
The lacking greater part of any party to shape a government.
Parties not willing to shape coalition. Eg: NDA 50 seats and UPA 50 seats. They won't frame a coalition. You'll get a re-election.
One of the parties of coalition hauls out for reasons unknown.
Chief Minister leaves, eg: notorious resignation of Delhi CM.
Quarrel among the party post-election.
