Rusting of iron occurs due to two main reasons:
1) the presence of oxygen
2) the presence of moisture or water
And if these two factors are present near an iron piece, it is likely to get rust.
Rusting is a chemical reaction which causes the iron to react with moisture and oxygen present in the air. The iron oxidizes to form a brownish layer on it.
