Under Zabti system the most fertile land was classified as Polaj. The Mughal ruler Akbar who implemented this system had divided the land in four categories:
Banjar: where no cultivation has been done for 5 or more years
Chachar: land which is left fallow for 3-4 years
Parauti: left aside to become fertile again
Polaj: fertile land where cultivation takes place
