During the middle of the nineteenth century, Italy was divided into seven states of which Sardina-Piedmont was the only one ruled by Italian princely house.
During 1830's Giuseppe Mazzini had tried to put together programs to unify Italy and also formed a secret society called Young Italy in Marseilles.
But due to the failure of this uprising, it was now on the ruler of Sardina-Piedmont ( King Victor Emmanuel II ) to unify Italy.
