We will write the breathing in and breathing out separately.
1) Breathing in
During breathing in the following activities happen:
1) The ribs move upwards and outwards.
2) The diaphragm moves downwards.
These activities increases the volume of the chest cavity thus allowing in air into the lungs.
2) Breathing out
During breathing out the following activities happen:
1) The ribs move inward and downwards.
2) The diaphragm moves upwards.
This reduces the volume of the chest and causes contraction of the lungs hence air is expelled out.
