The equation :

2 n² + n - 1275 = 0

2 n² + 51 n - 50 n - 1275 = 0     ( splitting the middle term )

2 n · ( n + 25.5 ) - 50 · ( n + 25.5 ) = 0

( n + 25.5 ) · ( 2 n - 50 ) = 0

n + 25.5 = 0   and   2 n - 50 = 0  ,  or   2 n = 5

n 1 = - 25.5  and   n 2 = 25
