What is voice?

Voice refers to the 'Who' or 'What' that is doing the verb's action in a given sentence.

There are two types of voices in English:

☆Active voice: Active voice means that a sentence has a subject that acts upon its verb.

Focus- On the subject doing the action.

Example- Monkeys adore bananas.

Sentence structure: Subject + Verb + Object

☆Passive voice: Passive voice means that a subject is the recipient of a verb's action.

Focus- On the action done by the subject.

Example- Bananas are adored by the monkeys.

Sentence structure: Object + Verb + Subject

There are five steps to change the voice of a sentence from active voice to passive voice:

  • Identity the subject, verb and object.
  • Swap the positions of subject and object keeping the verb in its place.
  • Change the verb to its third form.
  • Add a helping verb before the main verb.
  • Add "by" before the subject.

\boxed {\sf {\red {NOTE: }}} Don't change the tense of the sentence!
