Charaideo was the first capital of Ahom Kingdom although it was changed later. However, the place continued to have significance and housed the maidams or tombs of Ahom rulers. A maidam has a domical superstructure with an underground vault that has one or more chambers. The superstructure has a mound with a pavilion in the shape of a hemisphere on the top. There is an octagonal dwarf wall around the maidam. Out of over 150 maidams present, only 30 have been protected by Archeological Survey of India.
