PRINCIPAL CLAUSE OR MAIN CLAUSE is the subject part of a sentence.It completes the sense on its own.

SUBORDINATE CLAUSE OR DEPENDENT CLAUSE is a part of a sentence which depends on the other part of a sentence to fulfill its requirements or meaning.

EG: I first met her in paris where I lived as a small child.

here " I first met her in paris"is the principal clause as it itself completes the sense."where"is a connector."I lived as a small chid " is the subordinate clause as it depends on the principal clause to fulfill its meaning.
