π to σ orbital transition.

● Explaination -
- When iodine vapourizes, it transits from π to σ orbital which falls on violet region of visible light spectrum.
- Here, iodine absorbs red colour from visible spectrum and emits violet colour to the observer.
- Therefore, iodine vapour is violet in colour.
