The Britishers encouraged the production of commercial crops like jute, sugar, wheat, cotton, tea, etc. these crops were required to be exported to Europe and there was a rise in demand of these crops hence farming was commercialized hence large areas of the forests were cleared to increase commercial farming during this period.
