Administrative system under the Chola dynasty is still considered as one of the most efficient methods of rural self government.

Gram sabha was the general assembly of the village administration. Here elected representatives discussed the future plans and problems faced by the village people.

Gram sabha enjoyed full autonomy and all it's members were elected by the villagers themselves.

During the chola rule the administrative unit was the villages.

The style of administration of these villages used to be unique.

Their government patterns were mostly democratic in nature and the assemblies played a pivotal role in the overall administration.

The assemblies were Ur, Mahasabha or Sabha, Nattar, Nagarattar etc.
