Water is a compound and not a mixture because of the following reasons:-

  • Water is made up of combination of hydrogen and oxygen in a fixed ratio by mass.

  • Water can be decomposed only by chemical method not by simple or any physical method.

  • Water has a fixed chemical formula but mixture doesn't have a fixed formula.

  • The property of water is different from hydrogen and oxygen.

This are some reasons for water to be a compound not a mixture.
