1/f = (n-1)(1/R_1 - 1/R_2)

Explanation:

The lens maker’s equation for thin lenses is as given below as;

1/f = (n-1)(1/R_1 - 1/R_2)

where,

f =focal length (=1/2 \times radius\ of\ curvature)

n = refractive index of the material used

R_1 = radius of curvature of sphere 1

R_2 =radius of curvature of sphere 2

The lens maker's formula is used by lens manufacturers to manufacture lenses of the particular focal length which is then used in various optical instruments.

Focal length of the lens depends on the  the radii of curvature and refractive index. The lens maker’s formula relates the refractive index, focal length, and radii of curvature of the two spheres.

The lens maker’s equation for thin lenses is as given below as:

\frac{1}{f}=(\mu-1)(\frac{1}{R_1}-\frac{1}{R_2})

where,

f =focal length

\mu = refractive index of the material used

R_1 = radius of curvature of sphere 1

R_2 =radius of curvature of sphere 2

For water, \mu=1.33

\frac{1}{f}=(1.33-1)(\frac{1}{R_1}-\frac{1}{R_2})\\\frac{1}{f}=(0.33)(\frac{1}{R_1}-\frac{1}{R_2})
