Rust is an iron oxide, usually red oxide formed by the redox reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. Several forms of rust are distinguishable both visually and by spectroscopy, and form under different circumstances. Rust consists of hydrated iron(III) oxides Fe2O.

When an iron object is left in damp air or water for a considerable time , it gets covered with a red-brown flaky substance called RUST.

Rust is mainly hydrated iron(III) oxide, Fe2O3.xH2O.

Rust is red-brown in colour.

During the rusting of iron, iron metal combines with the oxygen of air in the presence of water to form hydrated iron (III) oxide. This hydrated iron(III) oxide is called rust.

It is not only the iron which rusts, even the steel rusts on being exposed to damp air(or on being kept in water). But steel rusts less readily than iron.
