PbSO4 cannot be prepared from PbCO3 directly because lead carbonate is an insoluble salt.
To prepare PbSO4 from PbCO3 first react the PbCO3 with nitric acid to get lead nitrate
PbCO3 (s) + 2HNO3 (aq) -----> Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O(l)
The lead nitrate is then reacted with any soluble sulphate, e.g. Na2SO4, to precipitate lead sulphate:
Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + Na2SO4(aq) ---> PbSO4(s) + 2NaNO3 (aq)
To prepare PbSO4 from PbCO3 first react the PbCO3 with nitric acid to get lead nitrate
PbCO3 (s) + 2HNO3 (aq) -----> Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O(l)
The lead nitrate is then reacted with any soluble sulphate, e.g. Na2SO4, to precipitate lead sulphate:
Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + Na2SO4(aq) ---> PbSO4(s) + 2NaNO3 (aq)
