we know that, overlapping strength of sigma p-p is greater than sigma s-s, but then why hydrogen molecule has more bond energy than chlorine molecule, even if hydrogen has s-s sigma bond ?

ssrikanth: no, ss overlapping is not stronger than pp and sp overlapping because symmetrical charge distribution of electron cloud

This is due to the smaller bond length in hydrogen molecule compared to chlorine molecule.
