Just like you when I was curious to know about Ved and started searching for the same. Here is what I have to share and will keep it to the context of inquisition only.

1. Searched for the authority on Veda as there are many compilations and books as well as many who says to be the authority.

2. I found someone whose life was about Vedas only and his name is Swami Dayanand Saraswati (founder of Arya Samaj), it is worth to know Vedas from his words as his whole life was dedicated to Vedas.

3. It is really difficult for a naive to understand Sanskrit and also the cryptic mantra and texts on his own.

4. Swami Dayanand Saraswati has also written Volumes on Veda and many books among them the Satyarth Prakash is very popular (Please read it at your own risk, you may belong to one of the cult or organization or sects or a belief system or a religion which he has exposed in the book, and this is the book you can start with also) .

There is also a website (other than Arya Samaj) http:www.agniveer.com where you can get the volumes in English.

5. I got to know from his book that there are many misconceptions about Veda among common people and also there has been adulteration to those texts which were identifiable because of the context at the place and the way Vedic Sanskrit is written.

6. I get to know that there was a time when Vedas were three, not four, and after that, it got to be four (Atharva Ved was written later and many mysterious sub-branches belong to Atharva Veda).

7. I found how different deva in Rig Veda is a different aspect of one.

I found what 'Som' and 'Somrasa' in Rig Veda mean in different contexts.

8. I found a really good compilation of SaamVed which I fell in love with.

I found and felt that Sanskrit sukta touching the heart and I can just imagine the level and state of the Vedic Rishis through whom the God spoke.

It is not like 'purane zamane ki baat' . it is like when you touch them they will touch your heart and not only heart, it can change the perception and the way you look at everything existing around you, within you and you.

Hope this may help you in the tiniest possible way to explore Vedas.

P.S. I realized that the book ‘Satyarth Prakash’ appeals to the logic only, the book does its job well, it is more of countering others by pointing on their problems. There is hardly anything where logic cannot find a fault, logic is a dominant child among many children of the human mind. Vedas are deep, people have compiled them in their limited capabilities.

Anyone who is serious towards the realization of his/her being or supreme consciousness should proceed with whatever available and introspect regularly to be on right track. The debates and mental adventures will take you nowhere.

Realize what you have read, life is short, everybody has a purpose. There is a saying “The greatest enemy is not the ignorance but the illusion of being wise.”

Realize that ‘I’ and ‘you’ are illusions, the creator has created this illusion for the grand play.
