These are medications that are used in the treatment of bacterial infections and also as prophylaxis for prevention of of the bacterial infections. This are also called antibacterial drugs. Examples include amoxicillin( a penicillin) and ceftriaxone.

There are different classes of antibiotics that work differently to prevent bacterial infection. Most of the antibiotics act by inhibiting the growth of the bacteria e.g by inhibiting protein synthesis or by degrading the bacteria's cell wall.
