If there is an injury to the blood vessel where the endothelium lining to the vessel has been damaged, coagulation begins almost instantly. The contact of blood with the subendothelial spaces starts two processes: change in platelets and exposure of subendothelial tissue factor to plasma Factor VII that finally initiates the fibrin formation.

Platelets instantly create a plug at the injury site; this process is called primary hemostasis.

Secondary hemostasis occurs almost simultaneously.

The additional coagulation factors beyond the Factor VII  respond in a complex manner for the formation of fibrin strands that helps in strengthening the platelet plug.
