Sclereids are types of cells that are reduced versions of sclerenchyma cells with very thick cell walls.

These form durable layers of tissue in most plants.

Macrosclereids are rod shaped sclereids that are generally found on the outer layer of the seed coat.

They have very thick secondary walls and there is virtually no lumen.

Examples of plants where these are found are leguminous plants like peas, beans and lentils.
