Cortisols:

Cortisols are steroid hormones secreted by zona fasciculata of Adrenal Cortex of adrenal gland present on the kidneys. These hormones are derived from cholesterol and has different effects on human body. They are:

  • They have predominant role in metabolism. Increasing levels of cortisol increases the metabolism of all the three principal components of food namely protein fat and carbohydrates.
  • It has an immunosuppressive function. When prescribed as medicine the component is called hydroxycortisone.
  • It has a role in maintaining water and salt balance in human body.
