In organic chemistry, an atom other than carbon or hydrogen. Acetamide (shown here) has two heteroatoms: one oxygen atom and one nitrogen atom. The carbon atoms and the hydrogen atoms are not heteroatoms.

Examples: Nitrogen, sulphur, chlorine and bromine are heteroatoms.
