inert gases and noble gases are one and same.
helium
neon
argon
krypton
xenon
radon
these gases have their outer most orbit filled with all electrons . it does not ionise or share any electron with other atoms. in periodic table they are located at the group 18

group 18 of the periodic table accomodates 6 elements - helium ( He), Neon ( Ne), Argon (Ar), Krypton (Kr), Xenon( Xe) and Radon(Rn). These gases were earlier called inert gases because of their chemical inertness ( non reactivity under normal conditions ). This chemical inertness was attributed to their stable electronic configuration .
In the last years, a good number of these compounds of these elements have been prepared thereby dicarding the earlier belief of their inertness. These gases now a days are called noble gases( the gases with little chemical reactivity ) . Since these gases are present in or around the earth in very small amounts these gases are also called rare gases.
